I love this place! I first tried Bikram yoga on a groupon almost a year ago. I hadn’t worked out since high school and I had recently put on some marriage weight! After my first couple of classes I wanted to be here every day!! The whole experience wasn’t just physical it was mental and spiritual. It was stress relieving and gave me a chance to meditate each day.  I also saw a difference in my body that I hadn’t seen before. I was more flexible and my muscle mass was lean and slender not really defining but I felt stronger. I had to stop going for a while because I had morning classes. Instead I went to Fitness Connection doing 20 minutes hot sauna, 30 minutes cardio, and 1 hour muscle training. I did this for almost 5 months and saw minimal results (no body fat loss) and I definitely did not feel stronger (no real muscle strength) but I recently graduated and started back up again!! Anyways!!! I tell everybody I know to just try Bikram yoga!! It just makes sense to do it!!.. IT’S A TOTAL BODY EXPERIENCE!!

Mary Jarvis has been teaching and training with Bikram and his yoga for over 26 years and knows what it feels like to use this yoga to recover from pain and fat!  As a survivor of a near fatal auto accident, Mary is living proof of the powers of Bikram Yoga. “In January of 1995, I came back to yoga wearing a neck brace and a back brace, weighing 159 pounds, barely able to move, in incredible 24 hour chronic pain, and very very depressed. I practiced this yoga every day for 2 years to avoid surgery, and demonstrated to my students that you can lose weight and heal yourself with this Bikram yoga practice.  I know what it’s like to practice this yoga being 40 pounds overweight, in incredible pain, barely able to move…and I know how to get out of it. There is not anything unique about me. Anyone and everyone can do what I have done.

I practice Bikram yoga to increase the strength, balance, and flexibility of both my body and my mind. These same qualities can serve us in living well in all aspects of our lives.  When we display strength, balance, and flexibility in our lives we are effective in creating what we want, experience satisfaction and contentment, and can weather whatever storm life throws our way.  Three keys we’re taught in Bikram yoga to get the most benefit from our practice can be used as metaphors to help us in our daily lives.

The first key is your breath.  In Bikram yoga we breathe in and out deeply through our noses so that our bodies remain calm, and to fully oxygenate our blood bringing energy to our practice.  In life, when something knocks you off kilter, the first thing to do is to slow down and focus on your breath.  This is useful whether it is something as minor as being stuck in traffic, or as significant as dealing with an illness or death. The simple act of taking a few deep breaths can calm your nervous system and focus your energy on the here and now instead of the endless thoughts racing through your head.  From that centered place you can more effectively deal with whatever feelings you are having, figure out what needs to be done next, or just support yourself in living from one moment to the next until you can regain your bearings.

The second key is to fully engage in your pose – to whatever level you body can do today – and hold it.  No bouncing up and down.  No coming out early.   Just consistent, strong action.  This is another useful way of being in life.  Rather than continually going back and forth between different strategies and plans when trying to move forward in your life, pick an action and be consistent until you have enough information to assess whether it is working or not.  If you’re constantly second-guessing, you will not be able to stick with something long enough for it to be effective anyway. While it’s great to be flexible and open to trying different things in your life, once you’ve decided on something be consistent enough to reap the potential benefit of your action.

The third key in Bikram yoga is savasana, or corpse pose.  This is basically a rest period between the floor postures when your body regenerates and prepares for the next posture.  Without this short period of rest, your body will not be able to get the most out of the next pose.  In life, if we don’t take breaks to refuel after climbing the mountain, or appreciate the accomplishments we’ve made, we will have hampered our capability for climbing the next mountain.  Not only is our energy diminished, but we will also miss out on the joy and satisfaction of recognizing the milestones or challenges we’ve met.  Take time to rest, rejuvenate, and celebrate between important cycles in your life, and you’ll experience more success and satisfaction.

The three keys –focusing on your breath, getting into your pose and holding, and shavasana – are all metaphors for the steps that will help you remain strong, balanced, and flexible through your lifetime. Practice Yoga for Life, and live well.  Namaste.

Memorial Day weekend 2013 my daughter was home from college and knowing my stressful life, suggested we take a yoga class. We found Afterglow Hot Yoga and my first response was “No way can I do this.” But I did, starting with the introductory special, thinking if I pay for it, I will come. The teacher said to come back within 24 hours, and I did, every day, for that entire week. The first class I had to lie down a lot but I liked the challenge. The instructors are so encouraging and even make it fun. I fell in love with it and began to go to class three to four days per week.

I assumed I would receive reduced stress as a benefit, and I did. But also watching my parents age, I felt very motivated to do something that was going to keep me upright, flexible, balanced and strengthened. I’m pleased to say that after 14 months of Afterglow Hot Yoga, I have experienced these benefits, and much, much more.

One benefit I did not expect was losing 25 pounds without dieting. I just did the yoga and the pounds came off. The life-changing benefits were confirmed in January 2014. After eight months of hot yoga, I had my annual well-woman check up and my primary care doctor asked “What have you been doing?” I told her I had been doing hot yoga and she said, “Don’t stop. You are getting so many health benefits from doing this.” She was so impressed that my cholesterol dropped 20 points to a low level, and my blood pressure went down that she took me off the medicine I had been on for a year. Most recently I had another colonoscopy because of a family history of colon cancer, and my tests came back clear. I am healthy. My G.I. doctor asked “What do you do to stay healthy?” and I told him hot yoga. As he left the room he turned to me, bowed and said “Namaste Anne, keep up the good work.” It’s very affirming that both my G.I. and primary care physicians endorsed hot yoga as an excellent thing for me to do for my health.

As an added side benefit, as the weight came off and the longer I practiced, the more I wanted to put good things and healthier food into my body. Also, with my medical background as a nurse and an orthopedic surgical nurse, I understand how very important flexibility, muscle strength, and the health of your spine is. Hot yoga does it all–my weight is perfect, I am healthy and I feel terrific. I am hooked!

The instructors have encouraging words for me every single time I am here. They are willing to get on the floor with you and show you how to do what you need help with. Even at the beginning when I was laying down half the time they said something that kept me coming back.

I’ve been through the aerobic craze of the 80’s, the running craze of the 90’s, and at the age of 57, I expect to continue hot yoga for years and years and years.

When Tony Succi started practicing at Afterglow Hot Yoga, little did he know he would lose the need for muscle relaxants, find relief from allergies, and start craving the benefits of regularly attending class.

Two years later, the 44-year-old Missouri City resident credits hot yoga with positively affecting every aspect of his life.”I know this may sound exaggerated, but doing a regular yoga practice has improved my entire life. I am stronger, faster, more toned, and my recovery times are much shorter. More importantly I have a level of calm and clarity in my mind that I’ve never experienced before.”

Originally thinking yoga was just a bunch of easy stretches, he tried DVD instruction and discovered a workout. After reading about new studio owner Danielle Hester, he signed up for five classes and became hooked. “I liked that it was a structured and very-challenging total-body workout–using your body, mind and breath-control with the heat to help you get the most out of each posture.”  While he loved class, he said what he loved even more was how amazing and energetic he felt when the class was over.

“I never expected I would be challenged and humbled by what I can still learn and improve upon.  I never expected how many times I would just crave to be in the heat.  And I never expected that after trying different types of fitness activities, if I could only do one, I would want it to be yoga.”

Neha says the prenatal class is an amazing complement to her daily pregnancy exercises. She says “I feel 100 times better after I exercise and this is especially important during pregnancy. I have seen myself get more flexible and much stronger in the poses we are taught. My hips are definitely opening up more!”

Neha loves the flow of the class, the expertise of the instructor, and the feeling of accomplishment she gets after she completes a class. “It’s a very good strength, flexibility, and breathing class that definitely has helped me during my pregnancy. The poses are carefully taught to ensure that we are doing the best thing with our pregnant bodies and benefit the baby.” Neha sleeps better at night when she exercises, and has less pelvic, back and hip pain. She would “1000% recommend this class to anyone who is expecting. It is an intimate, yet not intimidating class in a safe environment where expecting ladies can come to do the best they can for themselves and their babies.” Neha says she will definitely do this class if she gets pregnant again, and would like to continue yoga at Afterglow after she delivers.

Glennie enjoyed this class created specifically for pregnant women, as well as the relationships she built with the other moms-to-be. “I was able to maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy and the delivery was amazing! Prenatal yoga allowed me to get away from the daily stress of just life and focus on my baby and myself, while still being able to stay in shape. I kept coming back because it was my ‘me time,’ which is hard to get sometimes. I would recommend this class to anyone who would love to stay in shape while pregnant; I will definitely do this for my next pregnancy.”

Afterglow Hot Yoga Studio is by far one of the best and well rounded yoga studios I have attended.

I have been practicing Hot Yoga for 2 years at other locations, but since I started here at Afterglow in just a few short months my practice has improved significantly!! The teachers are amazing, they love what they do and really focus on their students helping make minor adjustments for significant improvements.

I am moving out of state and sad that I’ll be leaving Afterglow studio, but I will take all the great knowledge I have gained with me!

Stephen started practicing Afterglow Hot Yoga almost four years ago and immediately saw positive results: “I had been suffering from back pain for years–I did not expect the pain and stiffness to evaporate so soon. Practicing alongside others is a great motivator and the knowledgeable and encouraging instructors are paramount. They each bring their own approach to a class and that keeps it interesting and not so routine. I’m slimmer and more flexible than I used to be. Also, I feel much better overall: more strength/stamina and much less achy joints and back. I like the feeling at the end of class, feeling cleansed inside and out, stronger, energized, and relaxed. After class it can feel as though your mind has been given a reboot, and this practice gives me the energy to keep up with my two young children. Before I started practicing my doctor said I was borderline high blood pressure; now it is ‘perfect.’ I can’t see myself stopping ever, the benefits are too great. My daughter Lucy loves the classes for kids too!”

Immediately I really liked how much I was sweating — to me, sweat = hard work! I also LOVE that we don’t use any machines or weights, and it’s just ALL ABOUT ME, and it’s all UP to me–no pressure.

I have certainly seen changes in myself both physically and mentally–physically, I feel leaner, longer, and more flexible. When I go to yoga, it is my time. It is the only time where I have silence in my day (mom of a 4 & 8 year old!) and I can focus on myself. Once class is over, my perspective has changed. Life is just that MUCH better.

I certainly recommend Afterglow to everyone –young, old, man, woman, all shapes, sizes, and skill level. There are days when I feel strong and days when I feel weak, but nevertheless, it always ends the same: I’m always glad I went to class. And, it doesn’t take much to prep for yoga– mat and water–done! Also, I recommend Afterglow because I really do feel that they are here for the right reasons. They are always changing for the better (new classes, new times) and are always trying to push us to be better by having challenges and workshops.
I have found my place! I wish that I started practicing in my 20s, I wouldn’t have dreaded swimsuit season so much! I’ve never lasted this long with any workout (running, going to the gym, spinning, etc…) You name it, I’ve done it! I am a better wife and mommy because of Afterglow Hot Yoga.
